Kidney Cleanses: What to Know About Detox Plans

The liver is the primary site of alcohol metabolism, so it is the first organ to be affected by excessive drinking and it sustains the most damage.

These diseases hinder your body’s ability to naturally detoxify by harming organs that play an important role, such as your liver and kidneys. It is not clear whether bone tissue itself metabolizes alcohol by oxidative metabolism (i.e., ADH and CYP2E1 catalysis) or by esterification with fatty acids. Current evidence supports that alcohol alone is the causative agent that delays bone growth and repair. The events leading to abnormal sodium handling in patients with cirrhosis are complex and controversial, however.

Alcohol consumption has been linked to both acute and chronic kidney injuries, with the nature of the damage often related to the amount and frequency of alcohol intake. One of the most severe acute conditions is acute kidney injury (AKI), which can occur after binge drinking, characterized by a rapid decline in renal function due to the buildup of alcohol toxins. Finally, more basic research is needed to clearly evaluate whether abstinence that follows chronic alcohol consumption completely or partially restores the full integrity of the affected organs.

Alcohol Metabolism in the Liver

Kidney detox (typically a food, specialized diet, or product) can help cleanse the kidneys, according to its proponents. Kidneys are bean-shaped organs found under the rib cage in your lower back. They remove excess water and waste products from your blood, so promoting their health is important. Apart from a kidney detox, there are steps you can take to promote kidney health.

These findings suggest that the detrimental effects of alcohol on protein trafficking pathways occur rather rapidly (1 to 5 weeks) and that complete recovery is obtained within 7 days after cessation of alcohol consumption. Despite the clinical importance of alcohol’s effects on the kidney, however, relatively few recent studies have been conducted to characterize them or elucidate their pathophysiology.

These symptoms could start occurring as soon as 6 hours after your last drink and potentially last for weeks. The severest symptoms are part of delirium tremens (DT), the most dangerous level of alcohol withdrawal that should be undergone only in a hospital or rehab setting as part of a substance abuse recovery process. Just like a broken bone or infection needs time to heal, so does an overworked liver. While this depends on the amount of alcohol you have had over the years, your liver can see partial healing within two to three weeks, but this will depend on your health history. If you’re keeping up with this average (or less), the damage from alcohol is most likely minimal. Follow a low-fat, healthy diet that has plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Limiting the duration of cleansing programs to two days may also help reduce the risk of adverse health effects. In general, a kidney detox diet will include plenty of healthy foods, water, tea, and juices.

This affects the ability of the organ to regulate the acid-base, body’s fluids, and also the electrolyte balance. This is because liquor selectively increases renal perfusion and basal metabolic rates of renal tubes hence causing an increase in diuresis, leading to massive dehydration.
